Frequent Questions

How can I minimize the impact of hazardous waste?

Landfills are currently one of the largest sources of non-industrial hazardous waste. We've all heard these words for years: reduce, reuse, recycle. One of the most important means you have to help prevent hazardous waste is to reduce the amount of trash you create. For more information about how to do that, please see the Consumers' Handbook for Reducing Solid Waste.

Other guides EPA provides online to help you prevent hazardous waste include: At Home and in the Garden, Protecting Our Children, Environmental Violations, and At the Workplace.

If you know of a site that you suspect is contaminated by hazardous waste, report it to the National Response Center Hotline at 1-800-424-8802.

For a general overview of contaminants that are often encountered in the home or community, whether or not there is a Superfund cleanup occurring, please see Fact Flash: Common Contaminants.
