Frequent Questions

How does EPA involve communities in decision-making efforts?

EPA involves State, Local, and Tribal communities in its Superfund decision-making efforts through its Superfund Community Involvement initiative. The goal of this initiative is to inform potentially affected citizens about Superfund sites and to involve them in the cleanup process. This effort focuses on:

  • Informing the public of planned or ongoing actions, for example, through fact sheets that are distributed in the community or public notices;
  • Giving the public an opportunity to comment and provide input on technical decisions by holding public meetings or availability sessions and releasing technical documents for public review;
  • and Identifying and resolving conflicts.
