Frequent Questions

Who is involved in the Superfund site assessment process?

EPA tries to involve the community in the site assessment process, since it is the community that has the greatest knowledge of the area. The actual technical inspection is performed by EPA, or the state or tribal government and it may involve reviewing existing information about the site, performing a Preliminary Assessment (PA), and interviewing local residents about the history and effects of the site. If EPA determines that further action is necessary on the site, a Community Relations Plan may be formulated with community leaders and citizens in order to ensure continued community involvement in the site cleanup.
